I, too, have a hospital sponsorship. They pay tuition & books. They didn't pay for my uniform, but that's OK Exclamation I called the human resource person at my hospital to inquire. I went through an interview process. That was nerve-racking because I hadn't had a job interview in 20 years!! I think there were 10 us that interviewed for 2 positions. Don't let that discourage you, though! Just call & see if anything like that is offered.
What part of Mass. are you from? I have a brother in Weymouth. Smile

Thanks, MissE. That sounds like a wonderful idea. Any hints on how I would go about it? Are there specific channels to go through? You'd think as a medical transcriptionist I would have some contacts, wouldn't you? Sigh. That's one of the disadvantages to working from home--you end up kind of isolated.
Yes, get your phone book out and decide how far from your home you are willing to travel. Then visit every hospital in that vicinity. I would actually go to the radiology department in each hospital. Ask to speak with the manager or whomever is in charge of that department and ask if they do any sponsorships. If they don't understand what you are talking about explain it to them and let them know that you would be contracted to them after you pass the boards for rad tech. Also, let them know you would be willing to enter into any modality they needed (ct, ultrasound, ect..) This will help you. If you do happen to find a hospital tell them you want to fill out an application and be very persistant just like any job you were wanting. I hope this helps and let me know if you need any further help. Good luck!! Cool

P.S. If you do have any friends or family that work in a hospital, this would be a good time to call them! Wink

Thanks so much for the advice, guys. I made a couple of calls today, but I think everyone left early for a long weekend. Will try again next week and maybe actually visit some hospitals, as suggested. In the meantime, I spoke with the program director of one of the schools around here. Oh man! I had gathered that acceptance to a community college program was competitive, but today I found out what that meant—200 applicants for 20 places. I was wondering if it is possible or recommended to apply to more than one college at once? There are three in my area (well, each one is over an hour away, but that’s what happens when you live in the boonies). Should I try for all three to increase my chances?

Also, does anyone have any knowledge of whether non-credit experience would count in my favor when applying? For instance, 10 years experience as a medical transcriptionist (MT) and a teacher of the same, strong voluntary service, including holding elective offices, in our professional association, giving CE-credit worthy lectures, being a certified MT and a Fellow of the Association? I’ve written a chapter of an instruction manual (for a text expansion computer program) and have taught that program to a couple of large companies. I was also a pharmacy technician (certified) in England back before dirt was invented. Do applicants get a chance to put together any sort of portfolio (and does this kind of stuff count), or are they only interested in actual college credits earned?

By the way, I live in Townsend, about 10 miles north of Fitchburg and up near the NH border.

Thanks again for any advice.
