New grad with 1 year student technologist experience. I also have BA in Communications. I know the market is dismal everywhere but I have already heard that. Give me something postive. |

There's no easy answer. I doubt that anyone can tell you - "Hey yeah. Move to Idaho, that's where the jobs are".
Healthcare has not been spared from the financial storm devastating every facet of the global economy. Hospitals all over this country are facing the spectre staff layoffs and having to reduce services. At the same time, the patients we serve have become under- or unemployed and have lost their health insurance. We continue to provide treament, much of which will not be reimbursed.
In attempts to prevent layoffs, most hospitals here in the northest are under a hiring freeze. Not just management and non-clinical positons, but across the board. Open positions are not being filled.
With everyone in the same boat, you might try moving somewhere that you'd like to be. Try to choose a region that supports the rest of your life - provides outlets for those other activities that sustain you. Find the hospitals and outpatient centers, apply and keep applying.
Sooner or later, some of us baby-boomers will either retire or die on-the-job . The need for qualified imagers will not decrease.
According to the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics here - http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos105.htm#outlook), "Employment of radiologic technologists is expected to increase by about 15 percent from 2006 to 2016, faster than the average for all occupations.
Good luck,
hjh, RT |
