I was curious to know what it was about the job shadowing that caught your attention before actually going into the field of Radiology. Is job shadowing a must? Just wondering if any of you have gone in without the job shadowing opportunity. Thanks |

'Shadowing' a radiographer(s) prior to beginning the educational program seems to be a more recent development. I started school in 1977, never shadowed a soul, neither did anyone else in my group.
Of course, that means it wasn't surprising that of the 28 folks who began the program with me, we lost more than a third after the first two weeks in clinical (we spent a semester in classes before ever beginning at the hospital). Our first day in clinicals, a gal I know left at lunchtime and never returned. She would have benefitted from shadowing, no doubt.

X-ray has always been "in the dark." Growing up all anyone heard about
was being a dr. or nurse.
hjhogle and I went to school when there was "no such thing" as shadowing.
Being a volunteer yrs ago (working on the surgery floor) was where I learned about nursing and laboratory field. I took specimens to their
dept. Never saw the x-ray dept.

I applied to school and then shadowed at a local hospital. I'm glad I did because it just reaffirmed that radiology is what I wanted and helped erase any doubts. If you can, I'd definitely recommend shadowing. School isn't cheap and it would suck to get in and pay only to realize you hate it. |

Sidney-
It is good that you had that opportunity. And it would have been a costly
expense financially and time-wise for waiting to get into the program if it
was not what you wanted.
Good luck and have fun.
