I am amazed at how hard jobs are to find in this field. I graduated in '06 and worked prn for over a year looking for the clinical job I have now. It took someone to quit and move away for me to snag it. In Jan. of this year, my hrs. were slashed in half 'temporarily'; bright side is, I still have a job. The college here in town now accepts 27 instead of 17 radiography students, further glutting the market. Will this trend ever improve? Neutral

Of course.

I found my first (part-time) job at the tail end of a glut. In the many years since, there have been multiple swings.

It'll come to an end, it always does. Like we've always done, you just have to wait it out.

My position in New Orleans was eliminated, along with many other techs where I worked. I moved back to my hometown, Louisville, KY, since the job market "seemed" better there for RT's. That was 15 months ago, and other than a day here and a day there with a temp agency, I can't seem to buy a job.

I've been reading the forums on indeed.com. Seems like there's a glut of techs being pumped out all over the country. No jobs anywhere. This started BEFORE the current financial downturn.

I live in Minneapolis Minnesota, new to this board, and I am glad to find it.
My experience I am sure is not that different than most. I got into the field 2 years ago and the job market was tight. I had to work several different jobs all in the same hospital system, until something opened up. The prognosis is not as bleak as in some areas though. It seems that of the students that come though our facility the best get jobs quickly. It is a small community (Radiography) and if you are a hard worker, study your craft, and exhibit great patient care you will get a job here. That is despite there being about 6 schools in our area. This year in particular seems extra bleak with declining patient populations and electives becoming more and more scarce. There have been numerous layoffs all around town and it seems that there will be more. That said the last class who came through our hospital two got hired at our facility and about half had jobs within a month of graduation.

My advice for prospective students would be to get your foot in the door any way you can, work a front desk, be an assistant. All of these thing seem to help you get a job after graduation.

As for those of us in a job, not many are talking about looking for other jobs or lateral moves, changing modalities and such. We are all trying to hang on to what we have.

I am homeless and owe thousands for education. Favoritism and management choosing inexperienced kissasses for cross-training so they can be taught unsafe practices because they dont know any better has destroyed alot of lives Im sure not just mine. I loved radiography but it was the biggest mistake of my life and im living in a shelter.
