What is a 'swimmers' view? Why is it used and when?

The swimmer's view is just that~~one arm reaching up, one arm reaching down, like you're swimming! It's a good projection to use when you can't see C7-T1 on a lateral shot of the C-spine. You can also use it if the upper portion of the T-spine is your area of interest. Hope that helps Smile

At the hospitals I worked at, had a lot of football players, who we nicknamed "no-neck" specials.

The Swimmer's view is also good if the patient has a possible shoulder
injury (rotator cuff tear) and cannot hold weights.

And as xrayquilter posted, it is used for throacic spine studies. Many
imaging centers, hospitals, and orthopedics request the Swimmer's
view no matter what size the patient is. The drs. want to see the articulation of C-7 and T-1.
