What is a kyphoplasty?

Describe the procedure as well as the location within the body that it is done for.

let me see if i can remember it right, i was only on the CT side of them.

it's for lesions in the spine, or areas that have lost density. under angiography, the radiologists inserts a needle into the lesion and fills it with cement. this is to alieve pain from the lack of bone material.

Kyphoplasty is the restoration of height to the vertebrae. Before the cement is inserted into the vertebrae, as it would be in vertebroplasty, a balloon in inserted. The balloon is inflated in hopes to restore height to the body before cement is injected.

Vertebroplasty - done to give stability to the vertebae and prevent from further collapse.

Kyphoplasty - done to restore height (think reverse kyphosis in patient) and stabilize vertebrae.
