Hi there,

I am interested in pursuing Ultrasound and realize I would be around invasive procedures, but not very interested in performing them myself. I know that with radiology, the technician must perform venipuncture and inject dye etc, but does a sonographer do this as well?

Not true. In some advanced imaging areas (CT, for example) in some states (not all), there are CT technologists who perform venipuncture for CT studies that include IV contrast. In many states, you will not find any General Radiography technologists who perform venipuncture, nor are technologists responsible for the injection of contrast agents.

That said, contrast agents are just begining to be used in ultrasound.

So, chances are slim that I would have to inject dye into a patient? I just really don't want to have to doing venipuncture...I'm not squeemish about anything else, but that.

Again, I would have to say that future requirements of sonographers will depend on state law and facilty policy ... but yes, I would have to say that chances are slim that you'd be required to perform venipuncture. But - chances are slim that you'd have to perform venipuncture as a Radiographer, too.

In the old days, we injected all our patient's for IVP's .. but not any more. So I think you're fairly safe whether you go into sonography or radiography.

But let's see if any songraphers out there have a different take on what's going to happen with the potential for contrast in US.
