The ultrasound smartphone has been invented at Washington University in St. Louis. led by William D. Richard, Ph.D.,and Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and David Zar, they have combined a USB based platform with ultrasound imaging device technology that fits in the palm of your hand. "You can carry around a probe and cell phone and image on the fly now," said Richard of the device. "Imagine having these smartphones in ambulances and emergency rooms." "Twenty-first century medicine is defined by medical imaging," said Zar. "Yet 70 percent of the world's population has no access to medical imaging. The device not only has third world implications, but can also be used in the field in the military.
Most ultrasound machines today can cost $50,000. The smartphone is going to be starting in the $2000 range with a market target of about $500.
