Hello,

I'm considering a career change from IT to Radiology but was wondering if someone or a few people can tell me what's to be expected of a typical work schedule for a rad tech.

Do rad techs work 12 hours shifts like other health care professions or are they normally just 8-5 type hours?

In relation to that question, are there opportunities for overtime as a rad tech? or work at multiple hospitals much like Respiratory Therapists can?

i live in Southern California if that matters at all. Regardless, I'd appreciate any feedback no matter where you're from.

thanks again!

Changes in the economy have affected the healthcare sector just as every other industry.

Opportunities for OT have become non-existent here in the northeast, and I would expect that as hospitals continue to wind up in financial difficulty, smart RT's are grateful to have a job.

I've worked from Florida to the Canadian border east of the Mississippi river - 8.5 hr days were the most usual, but 4 10-hr days were available in some places, as were 12-hr shifts.

Those who are willing to work whatever - evenings, 3rd shift, holidays, weekends - those are the radiographers who find the most opportunities.

Good luck - check out the CA State DPH site for accurate information about California http://www.cdph.ca.gov/certlic/radquip/Pages/X-RayAndNuclearMedicineTechnology.aspx

hjh, RT
