You've got the answer in your own post -
"If none of the techs "invite" us to watch/help them, should I just follow them anyway?"
Yes. How badly do you want to begin learning/practicing? Enough to be a persistent, take matters into your own hands and do it? Remember, this is YOUR education, it's up to you to go out and grab it, it's not up to the Radiographers at your site to spoon feed it to you. If you're content to stay in the dark room ... they'll let you.
Go! (And good for you for figuring it out)

Thanks. I'll start following them on Tuesday. Maybe I'll get some comps done. I don't want to get on their nerves but you're right that its up to me. Wish me luck! |

If none of the techs "invite" us to watch/help them, should I just follow them anyway? I've gotten very good at running films because that seems to be the only time they want anything to do with students. I don't mind running films but I after being at this hospital a month, I have only gotten to attempt one chest x-ray. Is this normal? I have seven comps to finish by august and I haven't had the chance to even try one. |
When I was doing my clinical rotations, the students had to make the effort to observe exams, ask questions and basically take charge of our learning experiences. We were not "invited" to do anything, only occasionally. It was our job as students to take the initiative to jump in. Tell the tech you are with that you want to do the next chest x-ray. The techs won't chase a student down to observe something. Go ahead and jump in! If the techs don't like it...well, it's your learning opportunity. Have you asked any techs if they would practice with you? If not, do it.
Good luck! |
