|
Hi all, I'm new to this forum. I've just started my summer session of clinical, between second and third semesters. In my program, tis is a point where we all switch hospitals.
It feels like taking five steps back!
Different systems, protocols, etc. New people; Ok.
but the worst thing is that it's a most unwelcoming environment, and without a designated instructor.
So, I've got the blues right now.
I have loved my first year; had hit a great stride at my last clinical site. This place feels like a disaster, and the road ahead seems bleak.
I am burnt out on crummy techs doing a crummy job and getting thier jollies alienating students.

Boy do I know what you mean. I just left a clinic site where a tech actually said to my face how much she detested students because "all they do is get in my way and slow me down..."
What so frustrating to me is, as a student at my school, we are not permitted to snap back at the techs. We are to be polite and respectful at all times. If I could have just snapped back at that awful tech, I would have felt SO much better. I hope if I ever get like that, my job eithers fires me or I have sense enough to get out of the business.
Keep your head up. I know what it's like to have to learn new protocols and it does suck. Wish I had some advice on how to make it better, but I don't. Just remember - you're not going to be in school forever. And look at it as a leg up on job opportunity - the more machines you're familiar with, the better chance you have at landing a job. |

"What so frustrating to me is, as a student at my school, we are not permitted to snap back at the techs" (it isn't just your school).
Then it's probably a good thing that you're a student. Learning to keep your mouth shut and simply let others do what they're going to do will be incredibly useful to you, whether you stay in healthcare or not.
Do you think that, as a staff radiographer, the situation would simply have stopped if you'd "snapped back"? Situations escalate and you'll be left with consequences you didn't intend.
As a student in a radiography program, you're not learning (we hope) to push a button, you're learning to be a professional. Regardless of whether or not others act professionally.
Good luck

I know how you feel. I'm at my first clinical site and we have a clinical instructer but no one seems to want anything to do with us. I would like to practice and observe but I get the feeling that the techs are bothered by us.
If none of the techs "invite" us to watch/help them, should I just follow them anyway? I've gotten very good at running films because that seems to be the only time they want anything to do with students. I don't mind running films but I after being at this hospital a month, I have only gotten to attempt one chest x-ray. Is this normal? I have seven comps to finish by august and I haven't had the chance to even try one. |
