hello everyone,

i just graduated from x-ray school and there seems to be very few jobs around.
i've been offered a job to do mobile work, but i'm afraid if i take it i wouldn't really be gaining experience per se. i think i will forget all my hospital training. also if i stay in the mobile field for awhile will hospitals frown on that.

radifyme-
Check the thread "Ask a technologist" Wink

I suggest you take the job and have fun. The job market
runs in cycles with too many techs or not enough techs.
So while you are on the mobile job you will gain experience
and confidence with the equipment, technique charts, and
film.

Is the mobile unit using computed radiography or film? With film
you may be "digitizing" it to a computer site and then sending it
wirelessly to a teleradiology group. This is where you will gain
more knowledge then your peers. Very Happy

One job was with Health Examinetics. It was a mobile health unit that
had four 18-wheelers that performed physicals on various companies.
It is now known as Examinetics Insight. It travelled 360 days/year.
After 3 yrs "on the road" I was ready to settle down.

The other company was a small mobile x-ray outfit. We used Orex scanner with OnyxRad software. Dell laptop. Linksys sending units then converted to wireless.

Digital portables are nice but not that convenient on mobile vans. We used
manual portables that were 18" x 18" x 4' approx. The scanner was a single loader, 3'L x 2'Dx 1'H. Wt. 150 lbs.

There is a web site www.nci.com. It shows the entire mobile unit in a Honda Element. www.blueridgexray.comThis company is a sales office for the Orex scanners. www.aisxray.com. This mobile company is in San Antonio, Texas and uses a Scion.

www.orex-cr.com shows the scanners and the digitial portable unit.
It will show why it would be difficult to put it into a van. Computers are
sensitive and expensive, just like portables so driving is rough on them. Very Happy

The company was designed by a CEO of a teleradiolgoy group. He had it
for 1.5 yrs and had to sell it do to conflict of interest. The new owner was
not nearly as smart in the business world. He filed for bankruptcy this past
year after putting the screws to his techs, banks and other businesses.

Please do not let this stop you from working for the mobile company.

I will say the owner of the company is from East Tenn and owes IRS
in excess of $500K. A few of the previous employees have taken steps
to strip this person of his ARRT. In x-ray school, we used to give out the
"Golden Bardex" award (an enema tip to the jerk of the year in the class.
The enema tip is no longer used, it was not disposable Shocked

Radifye and MurphyMobile,

I also worked for Health Examinetics, it was great! I lasted 18 months and only left to get married. If you are single and want to travel this was a great company, I saw 38 states in 15 months. It gave me a life education that has stayed with me for ever. Any traveling company will give you experiences that will increase your knowledge even if it is a mobile unit around town. I also worked for a mobile company within one state and I still learned quite a bit. My advice is GO FOR IT!
