How many people here work something other than 8hr shifts.
Recently our facility has tried to change this but they claim that they can't make it work in radiology due to lack of coverage at certain times and over-coverage at others.
If you do work something other than 8hr shifts, what shifts are there at your facility. |

let's see...
mon through fri 8:15 am to 4:45 pm [8 hr shift]
fri 11:00 pm to 7:00 am [8 hr shift]
sat 7:00pm to 7:00 am [12 hr shift]
sun 4:00 pm to 12:00 am [8 hr shift]
yeah, i'm kinda crazy that way :mr green:
one of the last places i worked with gave me this excuse. now, granted, it all depends on who they have to work. i was doing every saturday 12 hr shifts, and was working fine with one tech who was doing every other saturday 12 hr shift. sundays they had 2 other techs doing the same thing. one of the techs quit, and they said that "nobody wanted to fill in on the 12 hr shift because it is so long...." blah blah blah. they had so many PRN techs that they could've split it into 2 6 hour shifts easily. but nooooo, we have to change around the entire weekend schedule so i can't get the hours i need, so i start doing 16's every other weekend, and an 8 every other sunday. then somebody says, "hey, i like that, i wanna do that. i'll make you a deal, i'll take all the other hours available so you're covered!" that's great, but then the other prn techs complain that they have no hours, so they reduce my hours so that I HAVE TO FINDANOTHERJOBJUSTTOKEEPUPWITHWHATTHEYDIDTOMEINTHEFIRSTPLACEIFTHEYHADN'TSWITCHEDTHEHOURSTO8'SINTHEFIR.....
sorry, got carried away there...
yeah, somebody will be willing to work it. in this economy and "lack of jobs" that everybody seems to be talking about, somebody will be willing to work it.

Okay... I am PRN for a large midwest hospital,,, I worked there 17 years before going to PRN.. We had tried 10 hr shift .. 12"s etc. I like all of them and we had no trouble staffing and no grumbling from staff.... but... management stated it wasn't working for them ... It was to difficult to mantain the schedule and keep all the hours equal for the staff.. hmmm We offered to keep making the schedule for the manager... as it seemed a little easier for the self- scheduling we were doing . It was shot down like a fat goose. I suppose that we were becoming to independent . We were fitting in kids sports and school functioning and trading to make us all happy... no one had called in "sick " the 3 months that the schedule was self made... but after it went back to 8"s and no one was getting time off during the week and weekend's were only for PRN .. The calls started coming in.
I now work PRN on the weekend's and have been asked to work during the week a lot because there is a staff shortage because there have been so many people that left to go other places. When I work there now, I am frustrated to learn that my past collegues left due to lack of spending time with family and not getting all the day time commitments done due to the Mondy- Friday stint. I am now working 3/ 12's at a clinic xray capacity.. Just a little less money, but wow... I have time now for family , Grand -kids .. and we (self-schedule)!!!! |

I used to do two 16s but it's to big a burn in my 50s. I love 12s though, I've worked them for years and it gives you so much more time for important things, like doing nothing. After all they don't give you your life back at the retirement party. One other thing, the best way to be invaluable is to work a shift no one else wants, which makes me very fond of eve and weekends, the shift diff at my job comes out to $5 an hour. |

I do 8 hour shifts in CT (as do most of the other CT and General X-Ray Techs) at my facility.
A few CT Techs do three 13 hour days per work week (they work 3 days on, two days off, 3 on, two off, 3 on, then 8 days off and then the rotation starts again). Not a bad gig.
In MR, however, it's usually 14+ hour days (6AM - 8PM +/-) and they don't like to schedule your work days all in a row for some reason (one day on, one day off, one day on, two days off, one day on and one day off perhaps).
