Hi,
Due for some tests and would like to get an answer to ease my mind. Is it O.K. to use the power bolus injection method for contrast dye, on someone with TYPE 1 diabetes, 50 years old? What would be the risks if any? I heard this was type of injection was not wise for a Diabetic.
Thanks

Anxious,
First of all the mode injection itself doesn't have anything to do with this question, its the contrast being injected.
All ionic and non-ionic contrast agents used in any radiology procedures can effect renal output in patients that are taking certain medications for diabeties.
These medications include Metformin(Glucophage), Glucovance, Avandamet, Metaglip. Consult your physcian before having any radiology procedure that includes injection of contrast material.
The normal procedure for patients taking these drugs, and having a contrast injection, is to have the patient stop taking the drug the day of the procedure, and wait 48 hours after the exam, and have a renal function test performed before continuing the medication.
Always have your physcian contact the radiology department about diabetic medications, before scheduling any contrasted exam.
