Found this on CTDaves Blog, where'd the quoted info come from? I can't find them (BLS) saying that anywhere?

Aheconline Blog: Bureau of Labor Statistics Lowers Estimate for RT Jobs
March 5, 2008 — ctdave95
I read this article on AHEC online blog this morning, and found it to be very discouraging for the future of the field here in the US. Please comment here about the subject, or on the website.

“The Bureau of Labor Statistics has lowered the demand estimate for RT’s that will be required by the year2016. It now appears that we will be oversupplied by 33% in radiography, 91% in radiation therapy, and 182% in nuclear medicine. They also lowered the projected need for sonographers by 35%. How did this happen?

It has been difficult for the past two years for graduates of programs to find the type of job that they had envisioned when they started training. Programs continue to open and expand and dump graduates onto a market that is over saturated. How can we get them to stop?

We constantly compare our field of training to that of nursing, however, we did not take a lesson well in how to compete with them, because they have not overtrained and do not have a surplus and are still in demand. Why don’t we listen?

We moved our programs to educational institutions where the driving factor is how much state allocations of funds can be obtained to support the school. Are we still in control? Can we lower enrollment? Can we save ourselves?”

That's 'cause it isn't on the BLS website ... it's on the AHEC online blog, front page, just as CT Dave indicated. Try going here: http://aheconlineblog.blogspot.com/

Found this on Medicalnewstoday.com

2008 Radiology Compensation Review -- The latest figures show a continued market demand for Sonographers, Vascular Sonographers, Cardiac Sonographers and Interventional Technologists. The number of General, Vascular and Cardiac Sonographer searches conducted by RadSciences Group increased from 47.9 percent of overall searches in 2006 to 58.5 percent in 2007.

The U.S. Department of Labor projects the need for an additional 23,000 Ultrasound Technologists by 2014. The aging "baby boomer" population and the advancement in imaging technology will likely drive the demand for imaging procedures to nearly half a billion outpatients and 100 million inpatient scans by 2008 according to recent research released by independent healthcare research firms. Considering the nation's aging population -- and looming healthcare staffing crisis, as reported by USA Today -- healthcare administrators must take heed to improve retention and increase recruiting efforts. There is an increasing need for hospitals to fill urgent radiology department needs and retain existing providers.

RadSciences Group works with healthcare leaders to improve retention and talent selection by specializing in providing organizational development programs and recruitment services to hospitals throughout the country. By partnering with clients, RadSciences Group is able to provide experienced Allied Health Professionals with the best information available and help healthcare organizations everywhere to secure the talent necessary to achieve proper staffing ratios.

Mission Statement: At RadSciences Group, our mission is to be a recognized leader in talent selection, leadership development and recruitment within hospitals and medical imaging organizations. More than just a professional search firm, RadSciences Group desires to be a resource and partner to healthcare leaders who believe that talent selection is more than just education and credentials, but also the science of understanding an individual's beliefs, motivators and values.
