Recently our radiologist has started looking very closely at pediatric chest X-rays and complaining about insufficient respiration. His claim is that it is insufficient if you do not have 10 ribs above the diaphragm. Personally I find this to be a little excessive as there is not way for you to explain to a screaming 10 month old that they need to take in a deep breath. But anyways. does anyone have any suggestions for getting a better inspiration. Apart from catching them on a gasp between crying. |

what really sucks is when you have a baby outside in the hall screaming his head off, bring him in and thinking to yourself "man, those lungs will be wide open!", and all of a sudden, he stops crying and smiles at you....
you've just got to watch your patient and time it. most of the time they're scared and sick, which will make them cry. god forbid you put them in a pigostat - then they really won't like you, but you'll get that inspiration.
i've heard of techs flicking the bottom of the kid's feet to startle them into a cry. i've heard of techs giving a little pinch [I DO NOT RECOMEND THIS!!].
best advice i can give is to just watch the breathing, and stay on the rotor, and wait for the best inspiration to shoot.
