so im 1 year from graduating from school and after i pass the registry i want to go straight into mri. i know its hard enough to get a job as an xray tech so it would be even harder to get a job where they would cross train me in mri too. so what i wanna do is just to to school again to do mri. so heres my questions. since im or will be an rt i dont have to get to school for another 2 years right? i've heard its like 6 months. and most importantly where can i go to school at? like where do they offer mri training? i live in the south florida area so if anyone knows any schools that would be great. thanks! |

It's usually best if you go to the source.
Anyone, nationally certified or not, can find information regarding our profession at www.arrt.org
There is information on educational requirements for MR, Sonography, etc. There is also a list of accredited schools in each of the modalities.

also check with your current school, and some of the local community colleges. the school i attended (GO NOVA!! *ahem* sorry) every once in a while will offer CT classes (which i took), MRI classes, and cross sectional anatomy

wow i havnt been on here in a while busy studying i guess! but thanks for the replies! hey papa are were you refering to nova southeastern here in south florida? i've heard that local community colleges offer training in ct, mri, radiation therapy, etc but when i check the arrt website i dont see them listed. is that because they are unaccredited? which means then i cant sit for there respective registry exams correct? |

You can get into MRI through the hospital or clinic with on the job training. Schools you have to be careful with. There is Armrit which is very expensive and though they say that you are certified a lot of the accredited hospitals will only accept ARRT MR certifications. I am not saying all of them but there is a large majority and 18-22 grand is a lot of money to pay if you can't get a job with that specific certification. Being an RT first is great and you can use that as a stepping stone. I feel that not having any background in imaging limits your knowledge base for MRI. It is a complex modality and having the experience and radiology background is a big plus. Cross sectional anatomy is also encouraged. Once you get into a facility you can obtain your competency requirements through the ARRT and sit for your boards. Once you obtain your MR registry, it is much easier to find a job in MRI. Because most hospitals are accredited, they require RT's first for the injection of Gadolinium chelates. Good luck with your endeavor |
