Two things that must be understood about kVp and mAs are quality and quantity.
kVp is the quality of the beam. The power of the available x-rays. This power is established by the potential difference between the cathode and the anode. The more power that is applied to the anode, the faster the electrons will accelerate from the cathode.

mAs is the quantity of electrons available at the cathode (over a given time). So the higher the mAs the more total xrays that can be produced.

Imagine kVp as a bow and arrow. The further you pull the arrow back on the bow, the further into a bale of hay the arrow will go. mAs would be the number of bows and arrows that you have shooting. The more mAs you add the more people shooting arrows.
