I have been enrolled in xray school for 10 months of a two year program that is located in the philadelphia area. All my research prior to attending xray school indicated that the job market would be excellent. Since I have been in the xray program no RTs that I have met at clinical sites are optomistic about the job market. Many have told me that is unlikely that I will be unable to find employment upon graduation. I am 36 years old and have two children. Attending xray school has placed enormous financial strain upon my family. I cannot continue down a dead end road. Deciding wether to quit or stay is a very difficult decision for me. I would appreciate any advice or opinions about the job situation. I just want to speak to as many peple as possible , so, I can be confident I've made the right decision. thanks for your reply, Scot

wow sounds like a though situation. i cant speak for philly but here in south florida im also hearing its tough to find a job and have second guessed this field also...but im only 21 not married no kids and i was playing on going back to school right after this to do maybe radiation therapy. but yea i hear jobs are hard to come by and there is a surplus of techs, so being right out of school i would have to compete with techs who have job experience when theres not alot of jobs to go around.

Scotty:

Remember you still have 14 months left until you graduate and the job market could change quite a bit by then.

You need to decide if this is something you really want to be doing and if you enjoy it. If not, you should consider "Plan B".

If you're going to stick with it you'll want to try to make yourself stand out from your peers prior to graduation (e.g. make sure the hiring mgr. knows you WANT to work for them, work as a Rad Tech Asst. during school, get experience in other modalities, etc.). Are your willing to move to get a job? Can you work Per Diem/Part Time?

Good luck and keep a positive attitude in spite of the tough times we are all going through Smile
