Why would iv contrast be necessary for a lumbar spine ct??

Postsurgical hypertrophic scar tissue shows definite contrast enhancement, whereas disc herniation remains unenhanced. Intravenous contrast is recommended in patients previously operated upon for disc herniation.

ok, that makes sense...however...my patient had not had back surgery previously???
