Hi, I'm just curious as to the goings on with radiology technologist in Canada... I am just about to qualify and wonder has anyone done the CAMRT exam... do i have to work here in my home country (Ireland) before I can apply to work in Canada??
here in N.Ireland, as radiographers we do general x-ray and no specialty. Only when we become a general radiographer and work on CPD can we specialise in MRI CT US etc etc, is that the same in Canada, do you specialise during the course of your study or after you have qualified? |

Hi Nicole,
I'm a Canadian Radiographer living in Ireland! But I'm down in Dublin, not N.Ireland. As far as Canada goes, the CAMRT website (www.camrt.ca) is very helpful. You don't have to have experience working as a tech to write the CAMRT exam, just proof that you graduated from an accredited program. (talk to your school, they may have done this before)
The exam is in two parts, each with a time limit of 3 hours. One exam is more technical aspects, the other more clinical, tho you get a mix of questions on both (if memory serves, it's been a little while). In Ontario we were trained in all Radiography specialties (interventional, CT, fluoro, etc..) but extra courses are helpful when you're applying for one of these positions if you've got lots of competition. Many of these courses are offered by the CAMRT as well. There are some subtle differences between Provinces (Quebec requires you write a slightly different exam, in french) but the CAMRT exam is required for most.
Let me know if you have any other questions! Check out the website, they have loads of info on the exam itself.
Slainte!
