|
Hi,
I've noticed there is a huge disparity in the math requirements for various schools. Some of them want you to have general physics under your belt while others simply want elementary algebra and basic chemistry and biology courses.
How difficult is the radiation physics in an RT program, and would it behoove me to be really mathematically astute and have a good general physics class behind me, or is it not so horribly math intensive? And how much math do you actually use in the field? Do you input cm/kg or meters squared into the computer controlling the l.a. or is it much more involved than that? I really haven't found much info researching this and I haven't job shadowed anyone yet.
Thanks! |

For radiation therapy, I would have a solid algebra background. Many formulas in therapy involve direct and/or indirect relationships, exponents and working with larger equations. A foundation for geometry and trig. helps when working with clinical scenarios. Many programs want you to have core requirements met before or while applying their schools, but usually you don't have to take the more challenging curricula like physics with calculus or organic chemistry etc. unless you are "looking for more" down the road. Radiologic Physics can be tough unless you go in with an open mind and utilize visuals that help illustrate the method to the madness.
Accelerators don't usually require that type of input you mentioned but usually field parameters, time or mu settings which you would be thouroughly taught in class. Along with countless quality assurance methods and double checks, your instructors in the clinic should instruct you on the proper operation of the machine while providing excellent care for the patient. |
