papa,

We did these about 5 years ago for dental implants, on our Toshiba 4 slice scanner, but only did about 4 cases for a local dentist. It was so time consuming, and we didn't make much money on the scan.

Our protocol was to lay the patient supine, immobilize the head, we placed the Sim/Plant prosthetic on the mandible and in the patients mouth, we did axial scans from 1 cm below the mandible to the top of the orbits in 1 mm cuts, we then did coronal reconstructions prospectively, and 3D reconstructions on our workstation. We made a CD and sent it back to the dentist so he could plan the dental implant on his computer.

Do you all really want to get into this? If so you will have to meet with the dentist and find out what prosthetic company software they are using, and find what the software protocol is for that company.

Most oral surgeons have their own cone beam CT scanners.

If they want the exam for TMJ disease then MRI is probably the preferred exam.

Here is some interesting reading for ya!! Interactive Computerized Tomography For Dental Implants: Treatment Planning From The Prosthetic End Result.

Hope this helps!! I don't know if I would want to get involved with this procedure again. Just my opinion!!
