|
Hello my fello radiology techs. I'm having a little problem at work and I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this.
The Chief radiologist is making the CT techs carry a "CT cell phone" so that they can reach us at their disposal. It is only used from 5pm to 7 am. Is this HIPAA compliant? I have to tell you that this rad is the most condescending, degrading and nasty doctor I have ever worked with. So the ''cell phone" issue is definately something none of the techs want to deal with. It feels inappropriate to answer a cell phone in the middle of taking care of a patient. We have a phone that has an answering machine but that is not good enough.
Can anyone educate me on this matter? Thanks. |

It sounds pretty unpleasant, and if nothing else, it sounds like poor patient care to have to take your attention off them to answer this guy.
I don't think, however, that you're going to be able to hang your hat on HIPAA. Although the transmission isn't secure, it isn't any less secure than .. talking on an elevator. As long as you're aware and are careful what you say, there's no violation. (And let's face it, HIPAA compliance is out of control and has gone totally overboard instead of simply addressing the issues it was designed for).
But you CAN take a look at your hospital's policy about cell phones in patient care areas. Many hospitals prohibit the use of cell phones within patient care areas because the transmission can interfere with necessary electronics - heart monitors, that kind of thing.
Good luck!

Why does the Rad need you at his disposal? Is he doing this with other areas of the department also? |

I was hoping I could jump on the HIPAA BUS and win this stupid argument. Unfortunately, the rad that wants us to use them is the chief rad. I will definately look into the cell phone policy here at the hospital.
This rad is really obnoxious and I'm going to address this with my administrator and supervisor on Tuesday. This guy really thinks that the techs are just sooo beneath him. |
