I've been working in Information Technology for the past 11 years and am now thinking about going back to school.

Trying to decide between xray tech and sonographer. Can anyone shed any light on the diffferences between the 2 career paths (positive and negative).

Thanks

Radiography uses radiation, ultrasound uses sound waves. Currently, there are quite a few states which do not have licensure of either radiographers or sonographers. The work in both professions can be physicially taxing, with radiographers (in general) moving more and sonographers standing more. Both careers require knowledge of anatomy/physiology, physics, patient care.

I've been a radiographer since 1979. The field has been incredibly good to me. I've worked in trauma, the OR, specials (interventional), ultrasound, been a shift supervisor and taught in both a hospital program and a community college.I went into clinical IT 8 years ago.

One thing you might consider (which would take advantage of your experience) is a relatively new (and exciting) career as a CIIP - a Certified Imaging Informatics Professional. CIIP's are PACS administrators, RIS Administrators, network and systems analysts. The focus is different, however, from standard IT. The issues in clinical IT are not the same as those in corporate IT, and the pressures facing us are likewise different.

I am also interested in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, (Ultrasound) I live in the Nashville, Tennessee area, and where I take classes at Vol State CC, you HAVE to have your 2yr associates first, then you can go another 15 months and "specialize" in Ultrasound. I do believe they will accept any 2 yr associate as long as it is in Allied Health and it is patient care related, but they do prefer a Radiography degree for obvious reasons. Also, I think that they want you to first work in that Radiography area for at least 12 months. Good luck at whatever you decide to do!
