In order to learn how to scan hearts, must you go to an ultrasound school that specializes in cardiology or can you go to a general ultrasound program? Most of the descriptions of general ultrasound programs do not list "cardiac" as an area of study. If anyone knows more about this, I would appreciate the information. Thanks!

More than one path in sonography.

Try here for more info http://www.sdms.org/career/selection.asp
There's a link on the left nav bar to let you search for an accredited program as a diagnostic medical sonographer with a concentration in cardiac.

I also did a general search on echocardiography training (which would NOT make one a diagnostic medical sonographer with a concentration in cardiac, but would make one an echocardiographer). Came up with this -
