|
hello all,
I have been researching for some time now online courses that are through accredited schools. I researched all over, every school that has been shown as an accredited school that offers courses online is a joke. I call the online colleges and they tell me they dont offer what I am looking for.
So my question is does anyone know of a school that I can attend online that would offer me a degree in medical sonography? I'm going nuts over here!!! _________________ K Mclemore |

Hi Kmclemore,
You are correct in hunting for an Accreditated school! This deciding factor is so important if you plan to transfer credits later on to get your Master's. Also, this is something your employers will look at when you go to get that dream position. Many students recognize this when its too late, after they have already spent tons of time and money.
Just some background- regional accreditation is the primary type of institutional accreditation in the United States. Some institutions with online programs hold national accreditation rather than regional accreditation because they are unwilling or unable to meet the rigorous standards of regional accreditation.
This is an important distinction because many educational institutions holding regional accreditation do not recognize credits or degrees earned at institutions that are nationally accredited.
Hope this helps a little. Our school is regionally accreditated and 100% online. We are a Not-For-Profit, Christian, college who has been around for more than 80 years. We have a huge campus in Orlando, FL, but you wont have to visit unless you want to go to graduation. The difference with our instructors and advisors is that we give personalized, individual attention. Here is our website if you are interested. http://onlineimaging.fhchs.edu/

Are you a sonographer looking for a degree? Or are you looking to become a sonographer? It's difficult to tell from your post.
If you're not a healthcare professional and want to become a sonographer, you will be able to complete ONLY the academic portion of your education online. You will also be required to learn and perform medical sonography in a clinical setting for mutliple hours prior to taking a national certification exam.
If you're already a professional who's looking to finish up a degree online, I've looked into the program from the previous poster's institution. I was impressed with Florida Hospital College's online curriculum, but finaces made it impossible.

something else i just realized...
schools need to be accredited through arrt for it to really do any good in radiology. do some schools say that they are accredited, but only by the state or reigon? i would think that this would be misleading to some. _________________

Sorry, Papa. Schools are not accredited through ARRT.
According to the ARRT website, acceptable mechanisms for accreditation are:
- Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT)
- Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT)
- Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in collaboration with the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS)
- Regional Institutional Accrediting Agencies (degree-granting divisions)
- Conjoint Accreditation Services of the Canadian Medical Association
- Australian Institute of Radiography
So what's important is that the school can't simply be an accredited institution of higher education, the radiologic technology or ultrasound or NM program itself must be accredited by one of the above agencies.
Which is why I always recommend that folks go to the source - the ARRT posts a list of accredited programs by modality and state. That's the the most reliable source of information.
